13/02/10 | by psmith [mail] | Categories: technology

have been using computers sens the age of 5 (15+ years). That is ,k. Windows9x/ME.XP and Vista ( which I hated and promptly ditched it and ran back to XP). Not to mention flip flopping through every Linux distribution From gentoo to Fedora and every distribution in between The Irony in the distribution hopping is that I started out it on Ubuntu back in 2005 (15 years old) after ten years of usind dos, windows 3.1, windows9X/me and XP and Vista ( HATED IT WITH A VENGEANCE) and running back to Ubuntu or Even Debian.

Pros Linux:

Free

Works on every Plat form Sparc to Itainium and every platform in between

Detected My HP Photo Smart C4200 series 4280 model series Printer and Dell 2005 FPW Flat Panel monitor

Out of the Box printer and File Sharing with Mac OS ( Winsdows requires several hours of registry hacking.

CONS Linux :

More configuration required

Possibility of IRQ and or DMA address conflict or faliure to boot (mostly pre 2.6 build kernel.

Pros Windows:

Point and click

More Software available

Lions Share of the Market

Cons windows:

Need for a Sixty to 150 dollar a year security sofware up date subscriptions

Annoying continuous Nagging from Windows Update

SPY WARE

I have been trying to get Open Solaris to cooperate with my one year old a Hp pavilion a6230n for the past week and a half. The installation went flawlessly all thirteen times I installed(due to lack of experience and neewb mistakes (I.E. not properly configuring the machine as a dhcp client and for getting top remove a extra nick card and disable the on board Nvidia MCP Ethernet adapter.

After several hours of googleing and trial and error untill my fingers where literally locked stiff i finally figured out theat i had to add a call to the hosts /etc/hosts file.

as follows

hosts files dns

nodename file dns

I willk keeps posting updates and fixes to rpoblem i find my self up against.
